Bluetooth - Definition

PC104.ca News Feed:

Bluetooth logoThis article is about the Bluetooth wireless specification.

Bluetooth is an industrial specification for wireless personal area networks (PANs) first developed by Ericsson, later formalized by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). The SIG was formally announced on May 20, 1999. It was established by Sony Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Toshiba and Nokia, and later joined by many other companies as Associate or Adopter members.

The system is named after a Danish king Harald Blåtand (Harold Bluetooth in English), King of Denmark and Norway from 935 and 936 respectively, to 940 known for his unification of previously warring tribes from Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Bluetooth likewise was intended to unify different technologies like computers and mobile phones. The Bluetooth logo merges the Nordic runes for H and B. This is the official story: however, the actual Harald Blåtand that was referred to in naming Bluetooth was most probably the liberal interpretation given to him in The Long Ships by Frans Gunnar Bengtsson, a Swedish best-selling Viking-inspired novel.

Bluetooth provides a way to connect and exchange information between devices like personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile phones, laptops, PCs, printers and digital cameras via a secure, low-cost, globally available short range radio frequency.

Bluetooth lets these devices talk to each other when they come in range, even if they're not in the same room, as long as they are within 10 metres (32 feet of each other).

Embedded Bluetooth

PC104.ca News Feed:

This document is an introduction to the use of Bluetooth for embedded control applications.? Although there are many resources that discuss Bluetooth for wireless headphones, keyboards, mice, and similar uses, this document is confined to the advantages and potential pitfalls of using Bluetooth for embedded control.

?In general, Bluetooth can be very useful for certain embedded applications, but applications that require either very high data reliability or guaranteed data availability will have to be designed very carefully since these are both weaknesses in Bluetooth.

Bluetooth is a radio communication system that is intended to replace any cable in any short-range communication link.?? It easily meets this goal in non-demanding applications such as connecting a keyboard to a PC or headphones to a cell phone, but will have great difficulty replacing an EIA-485 link with more than eight nodes.? Several dozen potential applications have been identified by the Bluetooth SIG, and are supported with specific protocols.? One of the intended applications is the replacement of legacy EIA-232 links.? Bluetooth works well for EIA-232 applications that don?t push the envelope of the EIA-232 specification.

Bluetooth uses the ISM band starting at 2.4GHz.? Bluetooth divides this band into 79 sub-bands and hops among them as described below.

Bluetooth devices connect to each other in a network called a piconet.? A piconet may consist of from two to eight devices.? In a piconet, one device is always the master, and the remaining devices are all always slaves.? Master-slave roles are never exchanged because the message and channel timing are derived from the clock and Bluetooth address of the master.? A device may participate in more than one piconet at a time, and may be a master in one piconet and a slave in another piconet at the same time.? A device may not be the master in more than one piconet at the same time.

Since Bluetooth shares its bandwidth with many competing services, a piconet attempts to reduce interference by hopping from one frequency to another at frequent intervals.? Since there may be more than one Bluetooth piconet in an area at the same time, the hop pattern that a piconet uses is partially determined by the unique BT address of the master device. The Bluetooth devices themselves negotiate this frequency hopping; the user or designer does not have any role.

Embedded Bluetooth for $2 » Micah's Bloggy Widget

PC104.ca News Feed:

This is a continuation of my experiments in bit-banging full-speed USB on the Propeller. I have the basic host controller working reasonably well now, so I started trying to do something a bit more “useful” with it by implementing a simple Bluetooth stack on top of it.

Bluetooth and USB are both quite complicated, and this project is implementing only tiny fractions of each specification. But I think it’s enough to show that the functionality you actually need in a simple embedded application isn’t that complex- and a lot of the cheap consumer electronics you can get nowadays might actually be more hobbyist-accessable than they appear.

Hanno on the forums found some great $2 Bluetooth dongles on DealExtreme. So I just had to order a few of these and try them out with my work-in-progress software stack. The result:

Propeller USB Bluetooth Test 1

That’s a Propeller demo board, the $2 dongle (stripped down and attached to a 4-pin header, for convenience) and no other components. The demo here is just scanning for nearby devices, but I also have some basic L2CAP support and I’m working on the SDP server. Currently the stack uses 4 cogs (3 for USB, 1 for Bluetooth) and 12 kB of RAM, but I’m hoping to optimize it.

(Of course, this is only possible because the Bluetooth dongle itself has significantly more RAM and ROM than the Propeller has. Oh, the economies of scale!)

The software is very much a work-in-progress, but you can find it in the Subversion repository, with an MIT-style license.

The new 32-bit microcontrollers bring the promise of more speed and more performance while offering an unprecedented level of compatibility with existing 8 and 16-bit PIC microcontrollers. In sixteen engaging chapters, using a parallel track to his previous title dedicated to 16-bit programming, the author puts all these claims to test while offering a gradual introduction to the development and debugging of embedded control applications in C.
Author Lucio Di Jasio, a PIC and embedded control expert, offers unique insight into the new 32-bit architecture while developing a number of projects of growing complexity.
Experienced PIC users and newcomers to the field alike will benefit from the text's many thorough examples which demonstrate how to nimbly side-step common obstacles, solve real-world design problems efficiently and optimize code using the new PIC32 features and peripheral set.

You will learn about:
*basic timing and I/O operation
*debugging methods with the MPLAB SIM *simulator and ICD tools
*multitasking using the PIC32 interrupts
*all the new hardware peripherals
*how to control LCD displays
*experimenting with the Explorer16 board and *the PIC32 Starter Kit
*accessing mass-storage media
